Meet in Athens
How to Join Meet in Athens

1.        To join this group for expats in Athens, visit the group's mailing list
on Yahoo by clicking
here and click on the “Join This Group” link on that
page. You will be asked to create a Yahoo ID by providing some
information about yourself.  Please provide at least your name, your sex
and your location. Choose an e-mail address to which you would like all
group messages to be sent.

PLEASE READ - MESSAGE POSTING GUIDELINES

2.        Meet in Athens is about helping people to meet eachother in
person
. The online communication aspect of the group is a necessary
but secondary part of what the group is about - it is not an online forum
(although it does have one for people to use if they wish). Therefore,
messages posted to the group, other than those in which new members
are introducing themselves, should contribute in some way to arranging
a meeting or activity.  The following messages will not be accepted:
those containing slanderous or defamatory comments; and, those
promoting spam, chainletters, business opportunities, hate, violence or
discrimination against any groups of any kind.

Posting a Message to the Group

3.        You can post a message to the group in one of two ways: visit the
group's mailing list (see link above) or the easier way of sending an
e-mail containing your message to meetinathens@yahoogroups.com  If
you send your message by e-mail, you must remember to send it from th
e-mail address you used to subscribe to the group. The group is
moderated and messages sent by new members will be reviewed before
they are sent to the other members of the group.  Messages will usually
be reviewed within a matter of hours.

Your Introductory Message to the Group

5.        One of the very few "rules" of Meet in Athens is that every new
group member must send a message to the other members in order to
introduce themselves.  This helps the rest of us to learn a little bit about
you before meeting you in person and makes the necessary online
element of the group a little more "human".  You must post your
introductory message
within 5 days of joining the group.  After that
period of time has passed, your membership of the group may be
deleted, but you are not prevented from rejoining the group later.  This
way I do not have to remind people to introduce themselves and then
wait for them to do it.  I can just delete them and let them know that they
can join again if they wish.  When writing your introductory message,
please tell us at least: your name, where you are from and what you are
doing here in Athens.

Suggesting a Meeting or Activity to the Group

6.        Follow the instructions above for sending a message.  It is more
likely that people will attend the meeting you suggest if you provide a
precise date, time and place for it - that way people do not need to think
about anything apart from arriving and enjoying themselves.  Do not
worry if you do not know Athens very well yet, you can just ask everyone
to meet outside a metro station and then choose a place together.

7.        If you want to suggest a meeting or activity, but you do not have
yet have any precise details or you want to first see if people are
interested, please make sure your message includes a statement like
"Please reply to my personal e-mail which is X".  When all of the details
have been arranged, please send them to the group to give other people
a chance to attend.  This ensures that the number of messages that go to
all of the group members (230 people!) is kept to a minimum and that
people only receive details of meeting or activities that will definitely take
place.

Replying to group messages

8.        You should only really need to reply to a group message if you are
replying to say that you wish to attend a meeting or take part in an activity
- this is encouraged because it ensures people can see a meeting is
happening and can encourage others to attend.  Occasionally group
members may ask a question to the other members and if you wish to
reply to a question, please make sure that your message is going to the
other member's personal e-mail address
and not the group e-mail
address - meetinathens@yahoogroups.com - because it will go to 230
people (so 230 e-mails) and may not be of interest to everyone!

Posting a Question to the Group

9.        Although the main purpose of the group is for people to meet
eachother, members may occasionally wish to ask the other group
members a question.  If you wish to do this, please make sure that your
message contains a statement like "Please reply to my personal e-mail
which is X".  This way, replies go to the person who wants to see them
and not to all of the members of the group, who may not!

Changing Your Group Message Settings

10.        If you would like to change the way in which you receive e-mails
from the group, or change the e-mail address at which you receive group
messages, you can do so by visiting the mailing list page (see link
above) and clicking on the "Edit My Membership" link.  If you are
concerned about receiving too many e-mails, you have the option to
subscribe to the "Daily Digest" version (you only receive one e-mail each
day containing all the messages that have been posted) or to the "No E-
Mail" version (you receive no e-mails and just read messages on the
mailing list page).

That should be all the information you need to start meeting other expats
and having fun!  Do not worry if this all sounds like a lot to remember, if
you make a mistake - I have made lots of them - I will just block your
message and politely (the first few times anyway!) ask you to resend it.  If
you have any problems, let me know using the "Contact LWG" button at
the top left of this page.  I hope to meet you in Athens soon!
